Zimbabwean national accused of stealing electric cables beaten to death in alleged mob attack at Lefara village

LEFARA – Maake Police are investigating a murder case following an alleged mob attack at Lefara Village on Tuesday, 20 January 2026, around 13:00.

Police were called to the scene after reports of a violent incident. Upon arrival, officers found community members gathered around an unknown male lying on the ground with serious injuries.

An ambulance was immediately summoned, and the injured man was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The victim, identified as a Zimbabwean national residing in Bridgeway Village, was reportedly assaulted by community members who accused him of stealing electric cables.

Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries later that evening, with Emergency Medical Services (EMS) certifying him dead.

Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, condemned acts of mob justice, emphasizing that taking the law into one’s own hands is a serious criminal offence that undermines the rule of law. She urged community members to report suspected criminal activities to the police and allow authorities to handle cases through lawful channels.
