BUTSWANA-A cloud of sorrow has fallen over Butswana Village near Ga-Sekororo after two young girls, aged between eight and nine, lost their lives in a drowning incident at the Molomahlapi River last Friday.

The girls are believed to have been spending time near the river when the tragedy occurred. Early findings suggest they may have been playing close to the water before getting into difficulty and drowning.

Emergency services, together with community members, local leadership, and volunteers, carried out search and recovery operations that continued into the evening.

The efforts eventually led to the recovery of the two children.

Maruleng Local Municipality Mayor, Tsheko Musolwa, expressed his gratitude to all role players involved in the operation, including emergency responders, community members, and the local councillor, for their dedication and support during the difficult process.

The mayor said the incident is a painful reminder of the dangers associated with rivers and other open water sources, especially when children are unsupervised. He urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant and to ensure that children are kept away from hazardous areas.

The municipality has once again called on communities to prioritise child safety and to take extra precautions around rivers, dams, and other non-designated recreational areas to prevent similar tragedies in future.
