EVANDER- A butchery operating from the Old Mutual Building in Evander was shut down on 6 January 2026 following a joint operation by health inspectors and law enforcement after it was found selling expired and rotten meat.

The closure follows a routine inspection during which officials made alarming discoveries. Meat unfit for human consumption was allegedly being sold to unsuspecting customers, posing a serious and immediate risk to public health.

According to authorities, the premises were in a severely unhygienic condition. Inspectors reported an unbearable stench inside the butchery, indicating advanced spoilage of meat products and poor sanitation practices.

Municipal officials stressed that selling expired and rotten meat is a direct threat to public health and warned that businesses failing to comply with food safety and health regulations will face strict legal consequences.

Residents have been urged to remain vigilant when purchasing meat and other food products. Consumers are encouraged to carefully inspect items before buying and to report any suspected unhygienic practices or unsafe food handling to health inspectors without delay.

The shutdown serves as a stern warning to other food-related businesses operating within the municipality. Authorities emphasized that non-compliance with food safety standards will not be tolerated.

The municipality further confirmed that routine inspections will continue across all business sectors as part of its commitment to ensuring clean, safe, and compliant trading environments for all residents.
