POLOKWANE – A Malawi cross-border bus was intercepted on the N1 Highway in Polokwane on Monday, 19 January, after traffic officers discovered serious safety violations that posed a major risk to passengers and other road users.
The Polokwane Traffic Control Centre (PTCC) stopped the bus while it was en route to Gauteng.
Upon inspection, officers found that the vehicle had a copied licence disc that did not correspond with the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the manufacturer’s plate.
Further checks revealed that the bus’s operating licence had expired on 31 July 2025, rendering it illegally in operation.
Most alarming was the discovery that two wheels on the driving axle were missing, making the bus unroadworthy and extremely dangerous to operate on a national highway.
Authorities have confirmed that the driver and the operator will face further investigation and possible legal action for contravening road traffic and safety regulations.
The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety has reiterated its commitment to road safety, urging all public transport operators to ensure their vehicles comply with legal and safety requirements before operating.
