TZANEEN – The Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation (SCI) unit based in Phalaborwa has arrested three additional female suspects, aged between 40 and 60, in connection with an alleged Department of Labour fraud case involving more than R825 000.

The suspects were apprehended on Wednesday, 07 January 2026, in Tzaneen following an intensive investigation into corruption-related activities at the Department of Labour’s Tzaneen office.

According to reports, during the period between January and May 2025, the Department of Labour received information pointing to fraudulent activities linked to Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) claims processed at the office.

Subsequent investigations revealed that one departmental official allegedly colluded with a private company to submit fraudulent UIF claims on behalf of beneficiaries in exchange for gratification.

As a result of these unlawful activities, the Department of Labour reportedly suffered financial losses exceeding R825 000.

The matter was reported to the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation unit, which conducted a detailed investigation. Upon completion, the docket was submitted to the State Advocate for a decision. This led to a coordinated operation during which the three suspects were traced and arrested.

The suspects are expected to appear before the Tzaneen Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 08 January 2026, where they will face charges including fraud, corruption, theft, and money laundering.

Other accused persons who were arrested in December 2025 have already appeared before the Tzaneen Magistrate’s Court and were granted bail ranging from R2 500 to R20 000. Their next court appearance is scheduled for 20 February 2026.

The Provincial Head of the Hawks in Limpopo, Major General (Advocate) Gopz Govender, has commended the investigating team for their continued efforts in combating corruption and safeguarding public funds.
