MUSINA-Authorities at the Beitbridge Border Post were left shocked after intercepting a Malawian-registered bus traveling from Johannesburg to Malawi, following the discovery of severe safety and licensing violations.

The 65-seater bus was found in a dangerously poor condition, with a badly damaged door, broken windows, and an interior that was completely torn apart.

Despite its state, the bus was transporting passengers across borders, posing a serious risk to lives.

Further investigations revealed that the bus was operating with a fraudulent licence disc and operator card.

Although records showed that the vehicle was last legally licensed in 2021, it was found displaying licence discs marked for 2026. In addition, the bus was heavily overloaded, carrying 32 passengers more than its permitted capacity.

The Malawian driver was immediately arrested at the Beitbridge Border Post for operating with a fraudulent licence disc and for overloading the vehicle.

Law enforcement officials reiterated their commitment to removing unsafe vehicles and irresponsible drivers from South African roads in an effort to protect road users.

The Department of Transport has also issued a strong warning to motorists and passengers about the dangers of using unlicensed or fraudulent transport operators, especially during the busy festive season when road fatalities tend to increase.

Some members of the public have called for stricter penalties for such offences, arguing that current punishments do not adequately reflect the severe risks posed to passengers.

The bus was detained at the Mantsole Traffic Control Centre (TCC) until alternative transport arrangements could be made for the affected passengers.

In a broader enforcement drive, authorities confirmed that 26 overloading charges were issued to cross-border buses on 16 December 2025 alone. The Road Traffic Management Corporation, working alongside the South African Police Service, continues to intensify road safety operations nationwide.

The incident has once again highlighted the urgent need for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and the importance of ensuring that all vehicles on the road are roadworthy, properly licensed, and compliant with the law.
