MATHIBESTAD – Two people have been confirmed dead after a lightning strike incident during the Mphebatho Troop Festival held on Saturday, 03 January 2026, at Dertig Sports Ground, next to Mphebatho Library.
According to information from local authorities and reports circulating online, sudden severe weather struck while the annual cultural festival was underway, resulting in multiple lightning strikes that hit attendees.
Initial reports indicate that more than 150 people may have been affected, while official confirmation from the Moretele Local Municipality states that at least ten (10) people were directly struck by lightning during the storm.
Moretele Local Municipality Mayor, Cllr Masango George, confirmed the tragic loss of two lives and said emergency services responded swiftly to the scene. Those injured received immediate medical attention before being transported to nearby health facilities for further treatment.
The festival, which attracts large numbers of community members, traditional groups and local leaders, was immediately suspended as a safety precaution to prevent further injuries.
The municipality said it is working closely with emergency services and relevant authorities to manage the aftermath of the incident and to support affected families. Updates will be communicated as more verified information becomes available.
The Moretele Local Municipality has extended its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to all those injured, emphasizing that the safety and wellbeing of the community remains a top priority.
