BURGERSDORP – The search for a child who reportedly drowned in a mining pit at Mine View, Burgersdorp, is continuing as the community remains hopeful for answers.

On Wednesday night, 4 February, community members held a night vigil near the mining pit after SAPS divers temporarily suspended search operations for the child who drowned at Burgersdorp Mandibini, next to Mine View.

According to preliminary information, the child is believed to have drowned in an open pit allegedly created by illegal mining activities, commonly known as zama zamas. It is further alleged that the child may have been trying to swim in the pit at the time of the incident.

Following the incident, residents gathered in large numbers at the scene. Community leaders appealed to men in the Mine View area to assist where possible, while police and emergency services were alerted and responded to the scene.

SAPS divers later arrived, assessed the area and indicated that it would be safer to resume the search during daylight hours. The search is expected to continue on Thursday, February 5.

At this stage, the name and age of the child have not yet been released. Police investigations are ongoing as the community continues to support the family and authorities during the search efforts.
