BURGERSDORP – A tragic incident unfolded earlier this afternoon after a child reportedly drowned in a mine pit at Mine View, Burgersdorp.
According to preliminary information, the child is believed to have drowned in an open pit allegedly created by illegal mining activities, commonly referred to as zama zamas.
It is further alleged that the child may have been trying to swim in the pit at the time of the incident.
Community leaders have appealed to men in the Mine View area to assist with efforts at the scene, as residents gathered in large numbers following the incident. Police and emergency services were alerted and are responding, while the community continues to assist where possible.
Authorities have not yet released full details surrounding the circumstances of the drowning, and investigations are ongoing.
