ZANGHOMA – A mother and her two children have been left homeless after a tent donated to them was washed away by heavy rains at Shipungu, near Zanghoma village in Greater Tzaneen.
Nkateko Majela and her two children arl their family home was destroyed by a severe storm in December.
With no alternative shelter, the family had been relying on a tent donated by disaster management officials. However, persistent heavy rain and strong winds have since destroyed their only remaining shelter.
The ongoing rainfall continues to cause widespread damage in parts of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality, leaving several families vulnerable and without basic necessities. Majela says all their belongings are soaked, and the situation is especially distressing as her children are expected to return to school.
“Children are going to school tomorrow and we have no shelter. Everything is wet and we are appealing for help,” she said.
Officials from the Greater Tzaneen Municipality Disaster Management unit previously visited the family and provided food parcels and the now-damaged tent. Ward Councillor Kholofelo Ndlovu has since vowed to visit the family to assess the situation and explore possible assistance.
Community members and relevant stakeholders are being urged to assist the family as they struggle to cope with the impact of the ongoing severe weather.
