POLOKWANE – Lebowa Funerals has released an official statement confirming that the coffin reportedly dropped by a hearse was empty.
The incident occurred on the D1200 road connecting Dendron and Bochum, in the northern side of Polokwane under the Molemole and Blouberg municipalities, when a hearse driver transporting the coffin allegedly lost control, causing it to fall from the vehicle.
In response to the shocking event, Lebowa Funerals issued an apology, stating:
“We sincerely apologize for the recent incident as depicted on social media. We understand the concerns raised and take full responsibility for the impact this has had on our clients, partners, and community. However, we clarify that the coffin seen in the video was empty and was en route to a company storeroom.”
According to reports, the driver only realized later that the coffin was no longer in the hearse. He then turned back and found the coffin lying in the middle of the road.
A witness at the scene said they tried to alert and stop the hearse after noticing the coffin fall, but the driver allegedly continued driving before returning to collect it. A video circulating on social media captured a passerby attempting to stop the driver, without success.
Lebowa Funerals emphasized that the incident was unfortunate and does not reflect the company’s values or standards. The funeral home added that it is actively reviewing the situation and taking immediate steps to ensure such an incident does not occur again.
