POLOKWANE – Following persistent heavy rainfall, the Limpopo Department of Education has warned that severe weather conditions have caused flooding in parts of Vhembe and Mopani districts, prompting school to remain closed in Vhembe and Mopani.

The South African Weather Service has issued a level 9 warning for Wednesday, coinciding with the scheduled reopening of schools. In response, the department has urged parents, guardians, and teachers in the affected areas to exercise caution and refrain from sending learners to school tomorrow.

“This measure is intended to safeguard learners and educators in flood-affected areas,” the department said. Officials confirmed that they will continue to monitor conditions with the support of municipal Disaster Management teams and provide daily updates on the situation.

The floods have also disrupted the delivery of school meals and scholar transport services, making it difficult for learners who live far from schools to attend. Most schools across the affected districts are currently inaccessible for both educators and learners.

The department emphasized that the severe weather poses particular risks to young learners in early grades and will announce when it is safe for schools to resume operations. Parents and guardians are advised to stay alert and follow updates from the department.
