SELWANE VILLAGE – Police divers have recovered the body of a boy who drowned at the Letaba River in Selwane Village, following an extensive search operation.

The tragic incident occurred on Friday, 9 January 2026, when three boys attempted to cross the heavily flooded river while swimming. One of the boys reportedly struggled and was unable to make it across.

Police and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were alerted and responded to the scene on Friday evening. A search operation was immediately launched but had to be suspended at night, as police divers do not operate after dark.

Police have confirmed that investigations into the incident are ongoing, and the community has been urged to exercise caution around rivers, especially during periods of heavy rainfall and flooding.
