MOKOPANE – The Mokonyane family from Tshamahansi in Mokopane, Limpopo, is appealing for donations to assist with the repatriation of the body of Thabang Mokonyane (23), who died under mysterious circumstances in Zimbabwe.

KMokonyane was allegedly found dead in Lutumba village near Beitbridge on Thursday, 1 January 2026, after travelling to visit his girlfriend and the mother of his child, Khathutshelo Mbedzi.

Speaking to sister newspaper Polokwane Weekly, the deceased’s aunt, Ramaesela Mongwe, said the family was unaware that Thabang had travelled to Zimbabwe during the festive season.

She said the family was shocked after receiving a call informing them of his death, adding that they have serious concerns and unanswered questions regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The family says it has identified several inconsistencies in the account provided and is struggling to come to terms with the loss.

Devastated by the tragedy, the family is also facing financial challenges and is unable to afford the costs of bringing Thabang’s remains back to South Africa for burial. They are appealing to the public for assistance to help repatriate his body.
