TZANEEN-ANC Limpopo provincial spokesperson Tony Rachoene has confirmed that Greater Tzaneen Municipality will soon have a new mayor, after meeting with the party’s caucus in the municipality.
The party led by ANC Limpopo Provincial Secretary Ruben Madadzhe met with the party’s caucus in the Greater Tzaneen Municipality to communicate decisions of the PEC meeting, took place on Sunday, 04 May.
Speaking with the media while in Vhembe, Rachoene said the purpose of the visit was to communicate the decision of the PEC to reconfigure the Municipality’s Political Management Team (PMT).
“ Our visit in Tzaneen was to communicate the reconfiguration of the PMT, in particular the mayor ( Gerson Molapisane).
We have communicated the PEC’s decisions with the caucus of the ANC in the Greater Tzaneen Municipality, and will allow the council’s processes to unfold”, Rachoene said.
He further said at the end GTM will have a new mayor, giving credence to the rumours that the party has instructed Gerson Molapisane to step down.
However, Molapisane is defying the PEC’s orders to voluntarily step down as the mayor of GTM.
After the party’s caucus, the GTM council convened a special council sitting to swear-in former Mopani District municipality spokesperson Odas Ngobeni as the new PR councillor, a move that indicate he’s being touted as the new GTM mayor.
During the council sitting, the municipal chief whip Given Malatji tried to propose a motion, believed to be a motion of no confidence, however he was quickly suppressed by the GTM speaker Sanie Tiba, citing incorrect procedures to table a council motion.
It is believed that should Molapisane continue to defy the ANC’s call to resign, he will be removed through a motion of no confidence.
ANC has 51 Councillors in the GTM council, while the remaining 18 belongs to the opposition parties. Therefore, Molapisane has no chance to survive the removal, should the party resolves to table a motion of no confidence.
