Louis Trichardt — A devastating head-on collision between a cross-border passenger bus and a light motor vehicle claimed at least eight lives on the N1 North near Masekwa Brick, outside Louis Trichardt, on Christmas Day.

The fatal crash occurred at approximately 11h00 on Wednesday, 25 December 2025, along one of Limpopo’s busiest long-distance routes.

According to emergency services at the scene, the impact between the bus and the sedan was severe, resulting in multiple fatalities.

Authorities confirmed that eight people lost their lives in the collision. The deceased include the driver and passengers travelling in the light motor vehicle, as well as several occupants of the bus.

Emergency responders were also faced with multiple trapped patients, all of whom were successfully extricated.

The District EMS Manager, supported by paramedic teams from Polokwane and surrounding areas, responded swiftly to the scene. Fire services were deployed to assist with extrication, scene safety, and overall crash management. Several injured passengers were stabilised on site before being transported to nearby hospitals for further medical treatment.

At the time of reporting, the N1 remained closed in both directions to allow for a full crash investigation and the clearing of debris. Motorists experienced significant delays and were advised to use alternative routes or postpone travel where possible.

The exact cause of the crash has not yet been confirmed. Authorities have launched a formal investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the head-on collision.

This tragic incident adds to the growing festive-season road death toll in South Africa, a period marked by increased traffic volumes and long-distance travel. Road users are urged to remain patient, vigilant, and disciplined behind the wheel.
