MALELANE-On Monday, April 8th, a dramatic scene unfolded on the N4 highway, approximately 500 meters from the Marloth Park turn-off towards Malalane, as a buffalo met its end in a collision with a passing vehicle.

However, what followed was not the typical response one might expect from such an incident.

Instead of waiting for authorities to handle the situation, the local community took matters into their own hands, defying official protocols to salvage the valuable meat from the fallen animal.

The collision between the buffalo and the vehicle created a chaotic scene on the busy highway.

While authorities typically manage such incidents, directing traffic and arranging for the removal of the animal, this particular event took an unexpected turn as members of the community decided to intervene.

Recognizing the opportunity to salvage the buffalo meat, which could provide sustenance for numerous families, a group of locals defied the directives of law enforcement and began the process of butchering the animal on the roadside.

Despite warnings and attempts to dissuade them, the community remained resolute in their decision to utilize the valuable resource that lay before them.

Local residents and conservation groups have voiced their concerns and called for stricter enforcement measures to deter such acts of poaching and animal cruelty. They emphasize the importance of community engagement and collective responsibility in safeguarding wildlife and preserving natural habitats.
