Three killed, five injured after lightning strike during night church service

BOCHUM – Three people lost their lives while five others were injured after a lightning strike during a night church service in Senwabarwana in the early hours of Sunday, 14 December 2025, at about 01:00. am.

The incident occurred at Radimana village, where members of a church congregation were attending a night service inside a tent erected in an open field.

According to reports, heavy rainfall and thunderstorms started while the congregation was singing inside the tent. A lightning strike allegedly struck inside the tent, injuring several congregants.

Eight people, aged between 12 and 56 years and all residents of Sefihlampyana village, sustained injuries and were immediately transported to a local healthcare centre for medical attention.

Three victims — one male and two females — were certified dead upon arrival at the healthcare centre. The remaining five injured congregants were rushed to a local hospital for further treatment.

The deceased were identified by their next of kin as Ribson Mothemane (46), Mosibudi Mokgobu (44) and Glenda Modjadji Ntjana (36).

Police have opened a case of inquest to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
