HLOGOTLOU – AM Mashego Secondary School and the broader Hlogotlou community in Groblersdal have been left devastated following the tragic death of two learners in a horrific crash on Friday.
The accident occurred on 14 November, shortly after midday, leaving two learners dead and three others seriously injured. According to a statement issued by the school, one of the learners had been allowed by his parents to drive their double cab vehicle to school because he was running late for a scheduled exam at 09h00.
After completing the exam, the learner allegedly drove back home with four other learners as passengers. Between 12h50 and 13h00, while travelling on the stretch of road between the local police station and Onane Primary School, heading towards Zama Zama Secondary School, the vehicle was involved in a fatal collision.
Two learners died at the scene, while three others — including the driver — sustained critical injuries. All were rushed to St Rita’s Hospital for emergency medical care.
The school confirmed that among the five learners involved, one is in Grade 9, two in Grade 10, one in Grade 11 and one in Grade 12. Their identities have not yet been released.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the accident, with police working to piece together the events leading up to the tragedy.
The Limpopo Departments of Education and Transport are yet to issue formal statements.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, with teachers, learners and families mourning the sudden loss of young lives and offering support to the injured and their families.
