NKOWANKOWA – Construction of the long-awaited R3 billion Dan City Mall has officially resumed, bringing renewed hope for economic growth, job creation, and infrastructure development in the Greater Tzaneen area.

The project, located along the R36 in Dan Village, had experienced delays, but activity on-site has now restarted with visible progress. This week, it was confirmed that 15?people have already been hired, with the developer expecting more recruitment as construction progresses.

The community members have been selected following what project leaders described as a fair and transparent selection process using a YES/NO evaluation system.

The mall is projected to open in March 2027.

McCormick Property Development (MPD), led by founder John McCormick, had earlier announced that construction would begin in early 2024 during a community meeting at the Nkuna Traditional Council offices in Muhlava village, the delays shifted the timeline to 2027, and stakeholders are optimistic about meeting the new deadline.

Dan City Mall forms part of a larger mixed-use development that includes a motor city, school, hospital, and residential developments such as August headman houses. The overall project aims to reshape the rural landscape and create long-term economic opportunities for local communities.

The mall will feature 36,000m² of retail space within a total development footprint of 146,000m². It will host three major grocery anchors, a strong fashion and lifestyle mix, food and entertainment offerings, banks, and essential services..

The design incorporates local cultural elements as well as environmentally friendly features such as natural lighting, solar power, waste management systems, and rainwater harvesting.

Ground clearing has resumed on-site, with machinery and workers preparing for the next major phases of construction.

The project is expected to create thousands of job opportunities and boost local businesses, with early recruits expressing enthusiasm about the opportunity.

A representative from the community liaison committee said they were pleased with the progress so far and grateful that local involvement was being prioritised.

Residents from Nkowankowa, Dan Village, and surrounding areas are hopeful that Dan City Mall will mark a new era of development and economic transformation in
