Burgersfort – A shocking video circulating on social media shows parents physically helping learners cross a swollen river on their way to school on Wednesday morning at Riba Cross, London, in the Burgersfort area.
The incident has once again highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by residents, particularly school-going children, due to the absence of a bridge in the area.
With recent heavy rains causing river levels to rise, crossing has become extremely dangerous, forcing parents to risk their lives to ensure their children reach school.
Community members say the problem is not new and has persisted for years. Despite repeated complaints and appeals, residents claim no permanent solution has been implemented.
“We have been crying for help for a long time, but nothing has changed. Our children’s safety is at risk every day,” said one concerned resident.
The community is now appealing to government, private companies, and any willing stakeholders to urgently intervene by introducing a school transport plan or constructing a temporary bridge to allow learners safe access to education.
Residents warn that without urgent action, the situation could lead to tragedy, especially as the rainy season continues.
