GIYANI-On January 15, the MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (COGHTA), Honorable Basikopo Makamu, visited Hlomela High School in Giyani one of the underperforming institutions in Limpopo Province, to motivate learners and assure them of government support.

The visit was part of the province’s broader “Back to School” campaign, aiming to encourage and uplift students as they begin their academic year.

Hlomela High School has struggled with low academic performance, recording a disappointing 33% pass rate in the 2024 National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams.

This represents a further decline from the 44% pass rate in 2023, signaling a pressing need for intervention.

During the visit, MEC Makamu emphasized that the learners should not feel discouraged by past results, reassuring them that both provincial and local governments are committed to ensuring the school receives the necessary resources and support to improve.

Accompanied by the Executive Mayor of Mopani District Municipality, Cllr. Pule Shayi, MEC Makamu took the opportunity to engage directly with students, teachers, and school management. He delivered a powerful message of solidarity and hope, stating, “You are not alone this year. You will not travel this academic journey alone.

” His words resonated deeply with the learners, many of whom are hopeful that the renewed attention and support will lead to positive changes in the school’s academic outcomes.
