BLOEMFONTEIN-Free State Education MEC, Tate Makgoe, and his bodyguard have died in car crash in the early hours of this morning on the N1 stretch near Winburg.
Free State premier spokesperson, Sello Dithebe, says Makgoe and his two bodyguards were trapped inside the car after it collided with the two cows.
Dithebe adds that emergency services crew used the jaws of life to free the three occupants.
A survivor of the crash, the driver, has sustained moderate injuries.
He has been taken to the Winburg Hospital for stabilisation.
The 59-year-old Makgoe has been Education MEC since May 2009.
Under his watch, the Free State has attained the highest matric pass rate in four consecutive.
