MAKAEPEYA VILLAGE — A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday afternoon, November 16, when a couple was swept away by powerful floodwaters while attempting to cross a flooded valley.

According to Maleboho SAPS, the pair tried to make their way across despite strong and fast-moving water. The current overpowered them, dragging both downstream. Community members who witnessed the incident rushed to help, but the force of the water made rescue attempts unsuccessful.

Police confirmed that the man’s body was later recovered by community members and first responders. However, the woman is still missing, and search operations are continuing.

Detectives, the Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC), Pathology Services, and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) all attended the scene. Police stated that divers have been activated and will resume the search for the missing woman on Monday.

Authorities have issued a strong warning to residents to avoid crossing rivers, streams, and flooded low-lying areas as heavy rains continue to impact parts of the province.
