TZANEEN – A 49-year-old man from Tzaneen is appealing for urgent medical assistance after an aggressive form of cancer severely damaged his facial skin and underlying tissues, leaving him in constant pain and distress.

Johannes Mokolokoto, originally from Tzaneen and currently residing in Alberton, has been battling squamous cell carcinoma since 2021. The aggressive cancer has progressively eaten away at parts of his face, deeply affecting his physical health, emotional wellbeing and quality of life.

According to Mokolokoto, doctors at various state hospitals performed several minor surgical procedures over the years, removing affected tissue bit by bit. However, these procedures have left him with a large facial defect, exposing deep structures and increasing the risk of infection and further complications.

Despite seeking help from multiple public healthcare facilities, he has not received the specialised intervention required to properly treat and reconstruct the affected area.

The prolonged illness has taken a heavy toll on him, leading to stress, repeated infections, social isolation and a loss of hope. However, those supporting him say the goal is clear: to restore his dignity, confidence and chance at a normal life.

Dr Kgoete, who is advocating for Mokolokoto, has made an urgent plea for specialist surgical intervention and public support to help cover medical and reconstructive costs.

“After five years of suffering, we wish him a successful surgery and proper medical care, but he cannot do it alone. He deserves specialist treatment to restore hope and allow him to live free from pain, isolation and uncertainty,” said Dr Kgoete.

A fundraising campaign has been launched to assist with medical expenses and surgical reconstruction. Supporters say every donation brings Johannes closer to healing and a chance to reclaim his life.
