ACORNHOEK – A 39-year-old mother, Sindy Phindile Mathakoane, safely delivered triplets at Tintswalo Hospitalon 02 May 2026, in what health officials have described as a rare and high-risk obstetric case.
The Mpumalanga Department of Health confirmed that multiple gestations such as triplets are classified as high-risk and are often associated with preterm delivery, typically between 32 and 34 weeks. These cases require advanced maternal and neonatal intensive care.
The three infants were delivered successfully within minutes of each other. The first infant, a girl, was born at 07:40 weighing 2,470g. The second infant, also a girl, followed at 07:42 weighing 2,530g. The third infant, a girl, was delivered at 07:44 with a birth weight of 1,790g.
All three babies are reported to be in stable condition and are receiving appropriate postnatal care.
The mother, now a parent of six children—having previously given birth to twins and a singleton—expressed gratitude and joy at the successful delivery.
Hospital Chief Executive Officer Ms M.B. Moyimane commended the medical team, including Dr J.C. Ndlovu, Dr S.T. Zungu, and the maternity ward staff, for their professionalism and clinical expertise.
The MEC for Health in Mpumalanga, Ms Sasekani Manzini, also extended her congratulations to the mother and praised the healthcare workers for their dedication.
“We are proud that this rare and complex case was successfully managed in one of our public healthcare facilities. The expertise and commitment of our health workers ensured a safe outcome for both mother and infants,” said MEC Manzini.
She visited the hospital on 05 May 2026 to personally congratulate the mother and welcome the newborns.
Tintswalo Hospital’s achievement is further highlighted by its strong performance record, having recorded zero maternal deaths from April 2025 to April 2026 and zero neonatal deaths in the past three months of 2026.
Health authorities say these outcomes reflect strong clinical governance, effective management, and a commitment to quality, patient-centred care. The facility continues to serve as a benchmark for healthcare delivery in the province.
Officials added that other healthcare facilities will be encouraged to adopt similar best practices as part of efforts to improve service delivery and strengthen the health system under programmes such as Ezempilo Ebantwini and the planned implementation of the National Health Insurance (NHI).
