MOKOPANE – A two-year-old girl has tragically lost her life following a head-on collision involving a Volkswagen sedan and a Mercedes-Benz on the N1-25 near Tobias in the Waterberg District.
The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety confirmed that the fatal accident occurred on Friday, 19 December 2025, at approximately 12:15. According to the department, the Volkswagen sedan collided head-on with the Mercedes-Benz, which subsequently side-swiped a Toyota heavy motor vehicle.
The young child, who was a passenger in the Mercedes-Benz, was declared deceased at the scene. One occupant from the Volkswagen sustained critical injuries, while another passenger in the Mercedes-Benz was seriously injured and one moderately injured. The driver and an additional passenger in the Mercedes-Benz suffered minor injuries.
Preliminary investigations suggest that reckless driving, particularly dangerous overtaking, may have led to the crash. The N1 was temporarily closed to allow emergency services and investigators to attend to the scene, but has since been reopened to traffic.
All injured victims were transported to Mokopane Hospital for medical treatment. The South African Police Service is leading the investigation, with assistance from traffic officials.
The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety has extended its heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased child and reiterated its commitment to promoting road safety and enforcing traffic regulations to prevent similar tragedies.
