JOHANNESBURG – Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (HAWKS) has made a major breakthrough in the case surrounding the alleged leak of the Class of 2024 matric results.

The results, which were reportedly circulating on the internet, were allegedly being sold before their official release, leading to a swift investigation by authorities.

The complaint was lodged by the Department of Education on Sunday, 12 January 2025, at the Pretoria Central SAPS.

The case was quickly escalated and transferred to the Hawks for further investigation. The swift action reflects the seriousness with which the authorities are treating the breach, as it undermines the integrity of the education system.

On Tuesday, 16 January 2025, the Hawks’ Serious Economic Offences Unit, part of the Serious Commercial Crime Investigation and Cybercrime Investigation Head Office, executed a search and seizure operation at a residence in Hillcrest, north of Johannesburg.

Following the approval of a search warrant, investigators arrived at the home of a 21-year-old man and his parents, where a thorough search was conducted.

During the operation, various electronic devices were seized, along with an unlicensed shotgun and live ammunition.

The suspect was promptly arrested and is facing charges related to the unlawful possession of a firearm. Additionally, the investigation into the alleged matric result leak is ongoing, with further inquiries expected to determine the full extent of the breach.

The Hawks have assured the public that they will continue to pursue the case diligently to ensure that those responsible for the leak are brought to justice.

The arrest has raised concerns about the security of sensitive educational data, highlighting the potential risks of digital platforms being misused for illicit activities.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to safeguarding the integrity of South Africa’s educational system.
