Qhubeka charity bicycle beneficiary on the run after bumping 5-year-old girl in Ga-Sekgopo

SEKGOPO – A Qhubeka Charity Bicycle beneficiary is reportedly on the run after allegedly knocking down a five-year-old girl on the pavement at Mosalehlaba, Ga-Sekgopo, on Friday afternoon.

According to eyewitnesses, the young girl playing along the pavement when she was struck by a speeding bicycle. The learner allegedly fled the scene immediately, leaving the child critically injured.

Residents and parents have since been urged to remind their children about the importance of safety when using bicycles — especially those distributed through community upliftment projects.

This incident follows growing safety concerns in the area after Grade 11 learners from Mohumi Secondary Schoolwere seen riding their new bicycles on the R81 road, just days after receiving them through the Qhubeka Charityinitiative.

The bicycles were donated on Thursday, September 18, through a partnership between Qhubeka Charity, Absa South Africa, and ZZ2 Farming.

The project was launched to help learners travel safely to school, reduce dropout rates, and improve punctuality.

However, some residents fear that the misuse of these bicycles could result in serious accidents if proper safety measures are not followed.
