TIYANI VILLAGE – Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba has assured bereaved families that the provincial government will provide educational and social support to safeguard the future of the children left behind by the victims of the tragic R81 Ga-Sekgopo crash.
The Premier made this commitment during an emotional eulogy delivered at the mass funeral of the twelve congregants who lost their lives in the horrific accident. The funeral was held on Saturday, 4 October 2025, at Roman Tigers Sports Ground in Tiyani Village, Collins Chabane Local Municipality.
The service was attended by government officials, traditional leaders, church representatives, and community members who gathered to mourn and honour the deceased.
Among those present were MEC for Social Development Florence Radzilani, Mayor of Collins Chabane Municipality Cllr Shadrack Maluleke, Hosi Mangava Mkanyani, Rev Dr GS Lebelo of the International Assemblies of God Church, members of the Limpopo Executive Council, and representatives of SANTACO.
Premier Ramathuba acknowledged the immense pain felt across the province, describing the tragedy as a collective loss that has left a deep void in families and communities.
“This is not just a loss for individual families; it is a loss that reverberates throughout our province. These were individuals who carried dreams, aspirations and love; their absence will leave an irreplaceable void,” she said.
She urged communities to live out the values of Ubuntu by stepping in to support the children left behind, stressing that actions should speak louder than words.
“Let us not make empty promises that will fade like whispers in the wind. Instead, let us stand firm in our commitment to these children,” she emphasized.
Ramathuba assured the families that the provincial government will provide assistance through existing structures. This includes educational support under the no-fee school policy and NSFAS for tertiary education. She said departments such as Social Development, Health, and Education will work together to ensure the children’s well-being and secure their future.
“Our government will ensure they are enrolled in supportive structures, whether through the no-fee school policy or assistance with NSFAS for their future education. MECs of Social Development, Health and Education, let us join hands in safeguarding their future and nurturing their potential,” she said.
The Premier’s message brought comfort to grieving families and communities, reinforcing government’s commitment to stand with them during this difficult time.
The mass funeral brought together mourners from across Limpopo, united in their grief and determination to support the families affected by the tragedy as they rebuild their lives.
