POLOKWANE – Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba has applauded members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) for their dedication and outstanding service during the Provincial Excellence Awards held at The Ranch Resort on Friday, October 10.

The event celebrated the unwavering commitment and exceptional achievements of police officers across Limpopo, while also reflecting on the crucial responsibilities they shoulder in ensuring public safety and upholding the rule of law.

The prestigious ceremony was graced by several high-ranking officials, including National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola, MEC for Transport and Community Safety Ms Violet Mathye, MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Mr Jerry Maseko, Provincial Commissioner Lt General Thembi Radebe, St Engenas ZCC
Bishop Dr. Joseph Engenas Lekganyane, Executive Mayor of Capricorn District Municipality Cllr Mamedupi Teffo, and Mayor of Mogalakwena Local Municipality Cllr Ngoako Thulani Taueatsoala, among others.

Premier Ramathuba described the awards as more than just a celebration of excellence. She said they also provide “a moment for reflection on the progress we’ve made and the challenges that remain.”

She acknowledged the public’s heightened expectations of law enforcement, noting that South Africans yearn for “a police service that is agile, effective, accountable, and above reproach.” She emphasized that the awards are “not just accolades; they are a clarion call” to strengthen policing efforts even further.

Quoting renowned African poet Ben Okri, Premier Ramathuba drew parallels between the themes of resilience in his poem African Elegy and the daily realities faced by police officers. She praised members of SAPS for their endurance, bravery, and unwavering pursuit of justice in the face of crime, violence, and societal challenges.

“The themes of suffering and resilience in Okri’s poetry reflect the landscape you navigate as officers. It is essential to recognise that your toils and sacrifices are not in vain; they carry profound meaning and purpose,” she said.

Premier Ramathuba also highlighted the strong partnership between the provincial government and SAPS in combating crime, particularly through initiatives in Thohoyandou aimed at addressing gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF).

She reiterated the province’s commitment to “uplifting women and children,” describing it as a moral imperative. She further commended officers for their extraordinary dedication, singling out the successful conviction of a perpetrator in a case involving a 101-year-old victim as a powerful example of SAPS’s commitment to justice.

“Tonight, as we recognise those among you who will receive awards, I want to convey my heartfelt congratulations. Each of you has earned your place here through hard work, collaboration, and an unyielding commitment to keeping Limpopo safe,” she said.

Premier Ramathuba concluded by urging officers to let the awards serve as a beacon of motivation as they strive for excellence, accountability, and compassion within SAPS. She called for continued efforts to rebuild trust with communities.

“Together, we can turn our collective suffering into the wonders of a brighter future. Let us rise to the challenge!” she concluded.
