MALAMULELE-An off-duty police officer has shot and killed himself near the Sikhunyani-Giyani road outside Giyani.
According to police, the officer was travelling with his female partner when an argument reportedly broke out.
The vehicle was later stopped along the road between Sikhunyani and Bambeni villages. Emergency services were called to the scene, where the officer was declared dead.
Preliminary reports says the girlfriend to the male deceased officer said that after she parked the car they were using on the side of the road between Sikhunyani and Bambeni villages outside Giyani, the man allegedly took out his service pistol and shot himself to death late at night on Thursday, 25 December 2025.
Police have confirmed that the deceased was a police sergeant stationed at Malamulele Police Station at the time of his untimely death.
The exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear. Police have opened an inquest docket and investigations are ongoing to establish the full sequence of events and the cause of death.
Authorities have urged the public to allow the investigation to run its course and have extended condolences to the family, colleagues, and loved ones of the deceased officer.
