NWAMITWA – A professional nurse was arrested after being found in possession of a cooler box filled with suspected stolen medical supplies at Dr. Hugo Clinic in Mavele Village, just outside Nwamitwa.

The arrest took place on Thursday night, following a routine security check that led to the discovery of the medication inside the nurse’s private vehicle.

According to the Department of Health, the clinic’s vigilant security personnel acted swiftly upon noticing suspicious items in the nurse’s vehicle. Their prompt response resulted in the immediate arrest of the suspect, who is now facing charges related to the theft of government medical stock.

“This incident is deeply concerning, but it also demonstrates the department’s unwavering commitment to protecting public health and ensuring that medical resources are used exclusively for patient care,” read a statement from the Limpopo Department of Health.

MEC for Health, Dieketseng Mashego, expressed grave concern over the abuse of power by trusted healthcare professionals.

“This behavior undermines the integrity of the department and the public’s trust in its services,” said MEC Mashego. “Healthcare workers are entrusted with the lives and wellbeing of our people, and any betrayal of that trust will be met with the full force of the law.”

Mashego added that the department would remain resolute in promoting transparency, integrity, and accountabilityacross all healthcare institutions.

The arrested nurse is expected to appear in court soon. Meanwhile, an internal investigation is underway to determine if other staff members were involved or if this incident is part of a broader syndicate.

The Department of Health has reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on theft and corruption within healthcare facilities, urging the public and staff to report any suspicious activity.
