DAN– A man is under police guard in hospital after sustaining burn injuries while allegedly setting fire to his aunt’s house in Dan Ext 2 on Wednesday, 7 January.
It is alleged that the suspect, believed to be from Tickyline, set a house belonging to his aunt alight following her refusal to perform traditional ancestral rituals for him. The aunt reportedly declined, citing her Christian faith.
At the time of the incident, the aunt was attending Wednesday church services, while an elderly woman was inside the house. The elderly woman was rescued by community members and escaped unharmed.
Police were called to the scene and found the suspect with burn wounds believed to have been sustained during the fire. He was arrested and taken to hospital under police guard.
The Ritavi Police have opened a case of arson, and the suspect is expected to appear in court once he is medically fit.
Community members have condemned the incident and praised the swift action that helped save the elderly woman.
