LETSITELE – Police in Letsitele rescued a 43-year-old man from an angry mob after he allegedly stabbed his 76-year-old girlfriend during the early hours of Sunday, 08 February 2026.
The suspect, who is alleged to be the boyfriend of the deceased, was arrested after police were alerted to the incident.
Upon arrival, officers found the elderly woman lying on the ground with a stab wound to her back. Emergency Medical Services were summoned to the scene and later declared the victim deceased.
According to information from the community, the suspect allegedly stabbed the woman with a knife following a brief argument before fleeing the scene on foot. Community members later traced him to his residence and brought him back to the scene, where he was allegedly assaulted by members of the public.
Police intervened promptly, rescued the suspect from the mob, and took him into custody. A knife believed to have been used in the commission of the crime was recovered at the scene.
The suspect is currently under police guard at a local hospital, where he is receiving medical treatment for injuries allegedly sustained during the assault by community members.
He will appear before the court once discharged.
Limpopo Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, strongly condemned the incident and reiterated the call to end gender-based violence and femicide.
She also warned communities against taking the law into their own hands, urging the public to report criminal activities to the police and allow due legal processes to take their course.
