PHALABORWA-The management of Eden Square Mall in Phalaborwa has announced the closure of the mall until further notice, following a devastating fire that occurred yesterday.

The blaze caused significant damage to several stores, including Pick n Pay Supermarket, Pick n Pay Liquor, Exact, Spec Savers, and Legit.

This closure is set to temporarily affect hundreds of jobs, both directly and indirectly, as many employees will now face uncertainty regarding their income.

The community, which heavily relies on the mall for employment, is now grappling with the financial strain caused by the shutdown.

Notwane Edwin Malatji, the Chairperson of the Phalaborwa Concerned Community Forum, expressed concerns over the economic impact of the closure.

He emphasized that the loss of jobs would further strain an already fragile local economy, which depends on the mall as a vital economic hub. Malatji also highlighted the inconvenience for local shoppers, particularly during the SASSA payment period, when the mall serves as an essential point for banking and various services.

Eden Square Mall management has reassured the public that the safety of their customers, tenants, and staff remains their top priority. An investigation into the cause of the fire is already underway, with hopes to restore the mall as soon as possible.

In the meantime, the community of Phalaborwa is left to navigate the temporary loss of a key resource, with many uncertain about the future.
