JOHANNESBURG-The South African media landscape mourns the loss of Zanele Mbokazi-Nkambule prominent figure known for her contributions as a Crown Gospel Awards founder and Ukhozi FM presenter.
Zanele passed away in the early hours of Monday, August 12, 2024, at Parklands Hospital. She was 52.
In a heartfelt statement, her husband, Bishop Mpendulo Nkambule, expressed the family’s gratitude for the outpouring of support during her illness. “We are grateful for all the prayers, love, and support we received throughout her illness. The family would appreciate privacy as we navigate through this challenging time,” the statement read.
Zanele’s health took a turn on April 21, 2024, when she fell ill during a broadcast of her show, Eshilo. Struggling with her voice, she was unable to complete the program, leading her colleague Thokozani MaMkhize Ndlovu to step in. The family later disclosed that Zanele had undergone minor surgery to address issues related to shortness of breath.
Bishop Mpendulo later revealed that Zanele had been diagnosed with lung cancer, a battle that ultimately claimed her life.
Zanele’s death marks a significant loss to the South African media and entertainment industry, where she was celebrated for her work in promoting gospel music and her dynamic presence on Ukhozi FM. Her legacy will be remembered by many who were touched by her talent and passion. The Nkambule and Mbokazi families have asked for privacy as they grieve the loss of their beloved Zanele.
