TSHWANE – A cross-border taxi driver was detained on Tuesday, 09 December, after law enforcement officers discovered a dismantled Honda delivery motorbike hidden inside a plastic drum in the trailer he was towing.
The incident occurred during a routine inspection as the vehicle entered the City of Tshwane, Pretoria. Officers stopped the taxi to check documentation for the goods being transported and to assess whether the overloaded trailer complied with safety regulations.
While inspecting the trailer, officers became suspicious of a small blue plastic drum tucked among other luggage. Upon opening it, they found a sack containing parts of a delivery motorbike that had been dismantled into two main sections and packed in an attempt to avoid detection at the border.
Preliminary checks suggest the motorbike may be stolen, and authorities believe the concealment method indicates a deliberate effort to smuggle the parts unlawfully.
The driver was detained for questioning, and the dismantled motorbike was confiscated as part of an ongoing investigation.
Police say further inquiries will determine the origin of the bike and whether additional suspects are involved.
