PHALAUBENI VILLAGE-An Elephant was killed on Saturday night at the Singapore River in Phalaubeni not far from Makhuva village.
The elephant was killed at about 21:30 in the Singapore river popularly known as Singiripoti.
Villagers from Mahlathi, Ndindani, Hlomela, Nsavulani and Phalaubeni flocked to the river to get their share of the meat.
They served themselves everything and left the elephant tusk. Earlier during the week Three Elephants were killed in Makhuva village for terrorising the communities of Mbaula, Makhuva and Phalaubeni
These elephants were destroying the villagers’ maize corn, and watermelons and putting the lives of villagers at risk.
Nature conservationists were called and they took down the elephants. Callies Matlala the Spokesperson of MEC of Limpopo Economic Development, Environment and Tourism said the communities should refrain from eating the animals because they don’t know the underlying diseases that the elephants might have contracted which in the end might affect them.
He said that communities should report the animals to nature conservation officials and police.
Community members of Selwane, Mbaula, Makhuva, Phalaubeni, Nsavulani and Hlomela rushed to the bushes to get their share. They used pangas, axes and electric saws to cut the elephant bones.
