Kgapane residents claim back their neighbourhood with a clean-up initiative

LOCAL NEWS

KGAPANE-A group of Home 2000 residents at Kgapane, Greater Letaba, carrying spades and shovels braved the cold weather on Monday morning to clean up their neighbourhood.

Residents report that there are unkept vacant stands in the neighbourhood that have overgrown weeds and trees thus, the area harbours snakes and has become a crime hotspot.

It is said that on many occasions residents have been woken up by screams of girls being dragged by unknown men to those bushes in an attempt to allegedly sexually assault them.

“I decided to take part in this project to eradicate the crime I see happening here. Also, some community members have started to use these spaces as dumping sites by littering. We want to restore dignity to this neighbourhood. The government alone cannot achieve that “, said Annah Maake.

Another community member expressed grave concern over the crimes and fear of residents citing that thugs steal from their homes and use the area as a hideout spot.

“We decided to contribute money to pay labourers to cut off the long trees. Maybe other communities can take a leaf out of our book and follow suit instead of waiting for municipalities to step in.

Greater Letaba Municipality media liaison assured the publication that the relevant unit will be deployed to help the residents where help is needed.
