HA-MASHAU– A 27-year-old man allegedly hacked his wife to death with an axe before taking his own life in a tragic incident that has left the Ha Mashau Misevhe village community in shock.
The gruesome event unfolded on Saturday, 17 August 2024, at approximately 18:30, when the couple’s residence became the scene of a horrifying discovery.
Upon arrival, police found the female victim with severe injuries consistent with an axe attack. The male suspect was discovered hanging from the rooftop, indicating that he had taken his own life after the assault.
The motive behind this tragic incident remains unclear, though authorities suspect that it may have been driven by domestic violence. The incident has once again highlighted the devastating impact of gender-based violence and femicide in the country.
Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe expressed her deep concern over the continuing trend of violence within relationships.
“We urge couples to seek professional help to prevent such tragic incidents,” said Lieutenant General Hadebe. She condemned the act, calling for a united effort to tackle the scourge of gender-based violence.
The Levubu police have opened murder and inquest dockets as they launch an investigation into the incident.
