MANKWENG- The University of Limpopo NSFAS dependable students residing off-campus have received their accommodation allowances on Friday, September 16, after the campus management swiftly managed to raise funds to advance the student allowances.
The student allowances advance by the University’s management comes after the off-campus students and landlords embarked on a violent protest on Wednesday, September 14 that led to the damage and burning of campus’s properties.
In a media statement released on Monday, September 19, the University of Limpopo said a total of 11 929 students received their allowances, including 1 458 students who live in their respective homes on a full-time basis for the current academic year.
” About 576 students did not receive their allowances, due to different reasons, including outdated banking details and funding approval challenges which are still being investigated with NSFAS” the statement further reads.
The off-campus students who enrolled in both semesters were paid R4 500 while others got R3 750 for February to July on Friday,16.
The SRC treasurer Mpho Ramodike said they have noted with disgust that NSFAS funded students residing in private accommodation have received advances instead of full off-campus allowances.
She further said students who received R3 750 instead of R4 500 will get their remaining allowances on or before 1st of October 2022.
” We can confirm that the SRC will meet with the University’s management, landlords and NSFAS officials on Thursday,22 September to fight for the release of all outstanding allowances” Ramodike said.
