South Africans can now watch several Disney films and series on Netflix, thanks to a content licensing deal between the two companies, TechCentral reported.

All five Ice Age films and the first two seasons of Percy Jackson and the Olympians went live on Netflix worldwide on 4 October. Each title has a three-month promotional window on the service.

The news came as The Walt Disney Company Africa held a showcase in Johannesburg on Tuesday. At the event, Disney promoted new seasons of Percy Jackson and a new Ice Age film.

Percy Jackson season 3 premieres on Disney+ on 20 November. The new film, Ice Age: Boiling Point, opens in cinemas on 5 February 2027. Viewers who want to catch up on earlier parts of both stories can do so on Netflix.

The deal covers more than these two franchises. The first four seasons of Will Trent arrive on Netflix around the world on 3 November.

The first three seasons of Tracker will follow outside the US from 26 February 2027. This is even though Disney listed a fourth season of Tracker among its Disney+ highlights at the Johannesburg showcase.

Animated films are also part of the agreement. Pixar’s Soul and Elio, and Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Raya and the Last Dragon, are due on Netflix in early 2027, Storyboard18 reported. Availability will differ from country to country.

Older series such as Felicity, Revenge and This Is Us are included in the deal as well. At the showcase, Disney was also promoting Pixar’s next original film, Gatto, which opens in cinemas on 5 March.

According to Variety, titles that are now on Disney+ will stay there. Disney-branded content will largely remain exclusive to Disney’s own platforms and channels, the publication reported.

In return, Disney earns extra money and puts its shows in front of a much bigger audience. Netflix said in January that it had passed 325 million paid memberships. Variety said part of Disney’s aim is to build interest in its upcoming releases.

The move is a change of direction for Disney. For years, the company pulled its films and shows from rival services to build up Disney+.

It also comes as Disney+ asks South African customers to pay more. Its Premium plan went up from R159 to R179 a month in 2026. The local streaming market has also lost a competitor, after MultiChoice shut Showmax down at the end of April.

Disney+ in South Africa is adding Formula E racing to its ESPN hub. ESPN already carries France’s Top 14 rugby and several European football leagues. It is also the only English-language home of the NBA finals in sub-Saharan Africa.

A new Disney+ app has rolled out to South African users. Disney said the app gives more personal recommendations, new parental controls and a better ESPN experience. The company said it also lets users watch while travelling in Europe, the US and other regions.
