Africa Now Radio with Nandi Madida will start airing on the South African youth station Y from 1 November. The show will be broadcast every Sunday at 1pm, according to Glamour South Africa.
The programme is linked to Apple Music. It gives local listeners a new weekly way to hear music and stories from across Africa.
“It is an absolute honour to add to their legacy. I cannot wait to share amazing sounds and stories coming out of this beautiful continent,” Madida said.
Madida was speaking about the long role Y has played in South African youth culture and music.
Africa Now Radio first launched in 2020. Since then it has featured both big stars and new talent from different parts of the continent.
Each episode includes a segment called “The Big 5”. It is a pick of the five hottest new songs of the week. The show also covers big new releases and has conversations with artists.
Y managing director Haseena Cassim said the show will give listeners a wider range of African sounds. She said it will also help artists and their stories reach people at home and overseas.
Some well known South African musicians welcomed the move. Rapper Focalistic praised the work Apple Music and Madida are doing with the programme.
“What Apple Music and Nandi Madida are doing with Africa Now Radio is giving our music space to live on a global stage,” Focalistic said. “She’s one of our own giving a voice to the sounds of South Africa and beyond.”
DJ and record producer De Mthuda also backed the show. He said genres such as amapiano should be celebrated with the context and respect they deserve.
Rapper Kwesta said the programme lets African artists tell their own stories in their own voices. He said this helps them reach people in their home communities and around the world.
The show plays many styles of music. These include amapiano and Afro-house, along with other genres from across the continent.
Y is not the first station to carry the programme. Africa Now Radio is already broadcast on Cool FM in Nigeria and on YFM Ghana.
The South African deal adds Y to that radio network. The first Sunday broadcast on Y is set for 1 November at 1pm.
