TZANEEN-Dan Village’s own Vicky Mkhawana (20) is a rising star whose journey is every young footballer’s inspiration.
From playing barefoot in worn-out oversized jerseys to lifting trophies on loan from Kaizer Chiefs, Mkhawana’s story is one of determination and talent.
Born in Dan Village, Greater Tzaneen, Mkhawana has risen from humble beginnings in a community often challenged by gangsterism, to achieving national recognition.
He made his debut for the Amajimbos under-17 national squad during the highly anticipated CAF U/17 Cup in Algeria, leaving an indelible mark on the tournament with his dynamic midfield performances.
In 2022, Mkhawana joined the Kaizer Chiefs Academy from Nkowankowa Barcelona FC in Tzaneen under the guidance of Peace Khosa, setting the foundation for his meteoric rise.
He signed a three-year professional contract, a moment witnessed by his proud mother and sister as he joined the elite ranks of South African football.
On loan at Kruger United FC, Mkhawana helped the club secure promotion to the Betway Premiership for the 2026/27 season. He had a standout debut season in the National First Division, including a dramatic stoppage-time winner against title contenders Milford FC that secured maximum points for his side.
The former SA Under-17 international continues to show immense promise, proving that talent, hard work, and resilience can take a boy from the dusty streets of Dan Village to the pinnacle of South African football.
