VOSLOORUS – Two pupils and their driver narrowly escaped injury after a scholar transport vehicle caught fire in Vosloorus on Tuesday morning.
According to the Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS), firefighters responded to reports of a vehicle on fire at around 06:03 in Vosloorus Extension 7 along Inyetsane Street.
Upon arrival, firefighters found the kombi fully engulfed in flames. Fortunately, the two pupils, aged 10 and 6, who are siblings, along with the driver, had already managed to exit the vehicle safely and were not injured.
Preliminary information suggests that the fire may have been caused by a mechanical or electrical fault originating from the engine compartment.
Firefighters provided on-site counselling to the traumatised children and the driver. The pupils’ parents were immediately contacted and arrived at the scene shortly thereafter.
Although the fire was successfully extinguished, the vehicle sustained extensive damage. The scene was later handed over to officers from the City of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department for further investigation and scene rehabilitation.
