MUSINA – A video showing residents parading a dead crocodile at Valdezia village has sparked intense debate on social media, with opinions divided over whether the killing of the animal was justified.

It is alleged that residents killed a stray crocodile at Valdezia village in Elim, outside Louis Trichardt, in the Vhembe District. The incident reportedly occurred after the reptile was seen roaming near the village following recent floods, causing fear and panic among community members.

According to reports, the crocodile’s presence close to residential areas raised serious safety concerns, especially given the increased movement of wildlife due to overflowing rivers and streams. Fearing a potential attack, residents allegedly took matters into their own hands and killed the animal.

The incident has since drawn the attention of authorities, who are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the killing of the crocodile, as wildlife is protected under environmental legislation.

Social media users have expressed mixed reactions. Some argue that the residents’ actions were justified, citing the danger posed by the crocodile, particularly to children and livestock.

Others believe that authorities should have been contacted earlier to safely remove the animal before the situation escalated.

It has also emerged that a day before the incident, a resident posted a warning on social media, alerting  Mahamu village at Valdezia  about the crocodile sighting and advising them to exercise extreme caution.

Wildlife Authorities have urged communities to report sightings of dangerous wildlife immediately, especially during flooding, to ensure both human safety and the protection of animals.
