JOHANNESBURG – Minister of Basic Education Siviwe Gwarube congratulated the Class of 2025 during the Top Achievers’ Breakfast held at the MTN Innovation Centre on 12 January 2026.
Addressing top-performing learners, parents, teachers, education partners and dignitaries, including Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi and Deputy Minister Dr Reginah Mhaule, the Minister reflected on the meaning of excellence, perseverance and purpose in education.
Drawing from an ancient Greek myth about a man condemned to endlessly push a boulder uphill, Minister Gwarube offered a fresh interpretation of the story. Rather than viewing it as a symbol of suffering, she described it as a lesson in finding meaning, dignity and even joy in the pursuit of excellence itself.
She compared the journey of the Class of 2025 to this climb, acknowledging the long nights, early mornings, pressure and self-doubt learners endured to achieve academic success.
She emphasised that the celebration was not only about the results achieved, but also about the discipline, resilience and commitment that made those results possible.
The Minister paid tribute to parents and guardians, recognising the sacrifices they made behind the scenes. She highlighted the emotional, financial and psychological support families provided, often without recognition, and thanked them for creating supportive environments that allowed learners to thrive.
Teachers were also praised as the “quiet architects of excellence.” Minister Gwarube acknowledged their dedication, professionalism and determination to support learners, even under challenging circumstances. She stressed that excellent learners are shaped by excellent teachers and thanked educators across the country for their continued commitment.
Addressing the top achievers directly, the Minister congratulated them on expanding what is possible for themselves, their families and their communities. She reminded them that this achievement marks the beginning of a new journey and encouraged them to carry forward habits such as curiosity, humility, effort and grit.
She further expressed gratitude to MTN for hosting the event and for its ongoing partnership with basic education, noting that private sector support sends a strong message of confidence in public education and in South Africa’s future.
In closing, Minister Gwarube delivered a special message to learners who excelled despite adversity, saying their stories demonstrate that success is not the absence of hardship, but perseverance in the face of it.
“Excellence is not only found at the top of the hill,” she said, “but in the climb itself.”
She concluded by congratulating the Class of 2025 and reaffirming that South Africa is proud of them, adding that the future is brighter because of their achievements.
