MALAMULELE – A well-known Xitsonga traditional gospel singer has added a new milestone to her journey as a community leader.

Lucia Hlabangwani, an Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) councillor in Collins Chabane Municipality, has been elected as the Chairperson of the EFF Collins Chabane Sub-Region.

Hlabangwani was elected unopposed during the sub-regional People’s Assembly held at Carlton Hall in Malamulele on Saturday, November 15, with a 95% delegate attendance.

Her election has been welcomed by many within the organisation, as she brings both political experience and strong community influence.

The newly elected chairperson is no stranger to leadership. She previously served in the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) in the National Assembly, representing the EFF. Her return to a leading role within the party at local level marks a renewed trust from members who backed her once again.

The conference was officially addressed by the EFF’s Deputy President, Godrich Gardee, who urged delegates and ground forces to unite and intensify their work ahead of the 2026 local government elections. Gardee emphasised strengthening structures and consolidating the party’s presence at grassroots level.

The EFF currently serves as the official opposition in the Collins Chabane Municipality, holding seven seats.

The newly elected Collins Chabane Sub-Regional Command Team is as follows:

  • Chairperson: Lucia Hlabangwane
  • Secretary: Lestius Mapengo
  • Treasurer: Vunkosi Ndlovu

They were elected during the 1st Sub-Regional People’s Assembly at Carlton Hall, Malamulele.

The leadership is expected to spearhead political programmes in the sub-region, mobilise supporters, and prepare for the upcoming elections as the EFF seeks to expand its footprint in the Vhembe District.
