PRETORIA– The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has issued a stern warning against the continued illegal use of its combat dress (camouflage) by individuals involved in criminal activities.

This follows a viral video circulating on social media showing people dressed in SANDF camouflage uniforms while allegedly terrorising communities and committing theft.

The SANDF has confirmed that the individuals seen in the video were not authorised to wear the patented uniform and were not acting on behalf of the defence force.

“Members of the public are advised that the SA National Defence Force camouflage is a registered item for use solely by authorised members of the SANDF or those appointed as honorary members by the Chief of the Defence Force,” the SANDF stated.

The Defence Act 42 of 2002, Section 104 (5) and (6) makes it an offence to unlawfully possess or wear prescribed military uniforms or insignia. Those found guilty could face fines or imprisonment for up to five years.

The SANDF urged the public, including clothing manufacturers and retailers, to refrain from producing, selling, or wearing SANDF camouflage uniforms for personal or unlawful use.

“Wearing the SANDF uniform without authorisation is a punishable offence. Anyone found using the camouflage uniform illegally will be prosecuted,” the defence force warned.

In a recent incident, two young men, aged 23 and 24, were arrested in the Moshoshoe section of Katlehong after being caught wearing SANDF military hats.

According to the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD), officers from the Intervention Unit stopped the duo to verify their identities as soldiers — only to discover that they were imposters.

When confronted, the suspects allegedly became aggressive, swore at officers, and resisted arrest. They were subdued and taken into custody.

The pair are expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court soon.

The SANDF reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding its image and ensuring that the public is not misled or endangered by individuals impersonating members of the defence force.
